Eros

Despite some Roman sources to the contrary, Eros, is a primordial God, involved in the birth of the cosmos. Representing Graceful love, Eros is the official God of Passionate Love. Erosologists worship Eros the eternally young and beautiful, representing the healing and restorative power of love. Although the feelings associated with eros often begin as sexual in nature, Eros is not limited to the satiation of physical desire. His quality of love is both spiritual and physical, with Eros having caused the love of beauty, passion healing, people and freedom. He represents fulfilling interests to develop the self, and to monitor one's personal desires with reason, rationality and selfless compassion.

Here, Eros holds Psyche, the Soul.
Bouguereau, William-Adolphe. 1889. Psyche et L'Amour.

Eros is usually depicted with a golden bow and silver arrow, which, when aimed at the heart of the mortal, instil love, infatuation, desire and lust. He is often depicted with a torch, representing the selfless of love. The adage "to carry a flame for someone", meaning, to love someone even if that love is unreciprocated, stems back to him. Eros is closely related to the God Psyche or the soul. This relationship represents the equal force of love to reveal the soul to the self, and to help it transcend the self to become divine.

Eros himself is built into the order of creation, representing the sexual process of fertility and creation. Our salvation, as in Christianity, is contained between the lovers. Through the process of love, we reveal our true nature and start to understand our fundamental existence. The yearning nature of eros means that we are constantly inquiring and seeking to deepen that understanding until we can ascend to the realm of Eros, where we occupy a state of perfect knowledge.
